Paramount Pictures have unveiled the first glimpse of Star Trek Beyond with a new trailer. See it for yourself above.
Long time Star Trek fans might find this one a little hard to digest, though, not for its substance, but for a lack thereof. This seems more like a wishy washy storyline sprinkled with bits and pieces of special effects, and a megaton of misdirection. Sure, we are used to subtle humor in Star Trek movies (and for the most part, it has always worked), but from the trailer it looks as if comedic bafoonery over-dominates what should be a serious Sci-Fi adventure. And what's with the Beastie Boys' hit Sabotage blasting in the background?
J.J. Abrams, who directed both Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness, is not sitting in the director's chair this time around either. Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) is taking over, so maybe he is taking the franchise in a slightly different direction. Let's just hope the contents of this new trailer are mere fragments of what the full movie will offer.
Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Idris Elba, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. It arrives in theaters on July 22, 2016.
