Gone are the days of the decades long drought between Star Wars episodes, as Lucasfilm has announced the shooting of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first of an anthology of standalones, but still canonical Star Wars films.

As a counterweight to upcoming franchise sequel Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One is a prequel set between episodes III and IV, telling the tale of a wayward rebel squadron's desperate mission to steal the plans for the Death Star before the planet-busting superweapon can be built for the galactic emperor's own nefarious ends. What's not to like about that?

The diverse and star-studded cast includes Felicity Jones (A Theory of Everything, Elysium) Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade 2) Mads Mikkelsen (TV's Hannibal, Casino Royale), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Forest Whitaker (Taken 3), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline, The Dark Knight Rises), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Jonathan Aris (TV's Sherlock), Diego Luna and Wen Jiang.

Gareth Edwards will direct this new Star Wars flick, having preciously directed another franchise reboot: 2014's Godzilla.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release December 16, 2016.
