It's hard to believe that we're already into July - with a mountain of tours happening everywhere, setting the stage for what will prove to be yet another great summer for live metal - and we haven't even reached Ozzfest, Gigantour or W:O:A 2005 yet! With the Sounds Of The Underground tour currently well underway, the North American front is also being dominated by another force - an alliance of metal titans that have come together to conquer every territory they set foot upon, leaving nothing but a charred path of total destruction behind them. I'm speaking of none other than the allied forces of U.S. death metal masters HATE ETERNAL, Brazilian brutal death metal lords KRISIUN, and Canadian progressive death metallers INTO ETERNITY. I can pretty much sum this up for you in one easy sentence: three different countries; three high-octane metal bands; one brutal continent-wide rampage. And if you're facing any indecision about whether or not you should spend the dough to see this tour, throw it out the window right now.

In one single night, HATE ETERNAL, KRISIUN, and INTO ETERNITY collectively delivered perhaps the most powerful, limb-paralyzing live shows this year. I've attended almost every metal gig that has rolled through this city, and while most have been something to talk about, I honestly cannot remember an event more deserving of praise than this. This 3-pack of metal's finest gave the fans exactly what was expected - a flawless performance from beginning to end. Unfortunately, ALL SHALL PERISH were forced to drop off the tour just mere days before the show due to van problems and expensive repair bills. JUNGLE ROT were a no-show as well (for reasons I am unaware of). But nevertheless, there was no loss of strength in the mix, which was proven during the forthcoming performances.

INTO ETERNITY

Making their second stop in Vancouver this year (the third will be on the HAMMERFALL/EDGUY tour on August 25; the fourth with STRATOVARIUS on October 5), Century Media up-and-coming favorites INTO ETERNITY offered (in my personal opinion) THE best performance thus far in 2005 - also the best I'd seen in a long, long time. These guys definitely have what it takes to make it big in this business and differentiate themselves from a rapidly growing number of acts currently populating the international metal scene. As I watched these guys on stage, I couldn't help but stand in awe because they know HOW to perform, they know WHAT they are doing, and they do it well.
The intensity of their live set never ceases to impress me. With songs like "Beginning Of The End", "Identify", and "Spiraling Into Depression", INTO ETERNITY showed an amazing display of pure talent throughout their 30+ minute set. Axemen/death throats Tim Roth and Rob Doherty shredded through each song beautifully, even delivering some amazing twin-solo attacks, while drummer Adam Sagan and bassist Troy Bleich showed off their skills in the rhythm department. And then there's Stu Block. His unbreakable confidence on stage coupled with his charisma and entertaining (and humorous at times) antics enable him to hold the audience in the palm of his hand with little or no effort. He was born to be a front man; it's just that simple. And voice -wise - well, I only have one thing to say about that: Stu Block is the next Rob Halford. That may be a bold statement, but really, all you have to do is listen to this guy sing and judge for yourself. That's all I can say. The chemistry flowing through this band right now is going to make waves in the coming years - just watch.
KRISIUN

Armed with enough firepower to blast a hole through a solid steel vault in one single blow, Brazilian brutal death metal purveyors KRISIUN unleashed their 45-minute onslaught with absolutely no remorse. Brothers Alex Camargo (vocals/bass), Moyses Kolesne (guitar), and Max Kolesne (drums) made sure that their presence was felt in every corner of that venue by. It's hard to believe that such high-caliber intensity can come from just three musicians, but anyone who knows the mighty KRISIUN (like HATE ETERNAL), a trio can make just as much of an impact as let's say a four or even five-piece can. All it takes is the ability, and KRISIUN have that and then some. Remember how big SEPULTURA used to be back in the '80s and early '90s? Yeah. Well, that's KRISIUN now. As far as I'm concerned, KRISIUN picked up the torch that SEPULTURA left behind years ago, and have claimed the throne as the new kings of Brazilian metal.
Witnessing a live KRISIUN show is like being hit by a runaway freight train, only harder. I'd personally never seen the band in a live setting before, and seeing as this was their first time in Vancouver, KRISIUN made it very clear that they were very happy to be there. They pulverized the crowd with a non-stop death metal feast full of aggression, speed, and unrelenting brutality. Alex's deafening growls + Moyses crushing riffs + Max's machine-like skin-slamming is one hell of a lethal combination I tell ya. Of the three bands on hand, I would have to say that KRISIUN were the loudest and most aggressive. At the end of their set, Alex thanked the fans for all their support and said they hoped to be back soon.
HATE ETERNAL

HATE ETERNAL just released their brand new album, "I, Monarch", on June 28 through Earache Records, so naturally this tour should serve as a celebration of sorts, right? Well, yes, but unfortunately, things don't always go as planned. Van troubles (blown head gasket etc.) had the band sidelined for a little over a week, resulting in some cancelled dates, including Nebraska, Minnesota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. During my conversation with HATE ETERNAL's tour manager, I found out that he and the band had driven non-stop all the way from Ohio to be in Vancouver for the show. It was a miracle that they were able to even make it here in the first place.
Like the two preceding bands, HATE ETERNAL delivered a brutal lesson in the art of aggression, essentially serving up over 60 minutes of their brand of pure, uncompromising metal. It was evident that the band were excited to be back on the road again, as mainman/vocalist/guitarist Erik Rutan stated that they "wouldn't have missed it for the world" (to be in Vancouver), during the beginning part of the set. Watching HATE ETERNAL perform as a unit (a trio at that) is jaw-dropping to say the very least. The sheer strength of this band is unbelievable. Rutan can handle the guitar perfectly while unleashing those unearthly growls, and bassist/secondary growler Randy Piro does a great job of providing all of the back-end depth. And Derek Roddy? The man is sub-machine gun! This guy can throw the blast beasts around every which way just as well as any other speed master (ie: Gene Hoglan, Nick Barker). When it comes to perfecting death metal in both sound and mechanics, you really can't get much better than a band like HATE ETERNAL.
To summarize, all three bands performed flawless sets and I would argue the fact with anyone who disagrees. But don't take my word for it. Go witness this tour for yourself. There are still plenty of shows left all the way up until July 24, where it finishes up in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. After that, HATE ETERNAL are heading over to Europe with BEHEMOTH and BLOOD RED THRONE in September. As for KRISIUN, they are also going to Europe for a slew of festival dates, and INTO ETERNITY will be joining HAMMERFALL and EDGUY for another North American trek in August. In any event, keep supporting these bands. They're well worth it. [FIN]
